Let's make counting fun!

I was having a hard time getting my son to learn his numbers & counting. He was getting bored somehow and would not co-operate while learning his numbers. So in today's activity I changed my approach and kind of made counting into a game. Jumping right into the activity here's what you will need for it.

Materials needed:

  • Pipe-cleaners

  • Strings

  • Post-its

  • Hole puncher

  • Scissors

  • Letter Tiles

  • Beads

  • Number cards

Steps:

  1. Make the words from one to five with the Letter tiles, then hand the pipe-cleaners & the beads to the child & ask him string the number of beads to match with the numbers.

2. When done, keep the words & hand the child a hole puncher & a few strings. Ask them to match the numbers and make the same number of holes on the strip. And then string through the holes.

3. Lastly, hand the child, number cards to match with all of it.

This activity is based on Learning by doing. When the child strings the beads he is more aware of the object in his hand, because he is feeling it by touch. Also it is a game that he needs to win, so he will count correctly since he has been challenged.

Punching holes in the paper will make the child see the number physically. The holes are visuals which are representing each number for him. Stringing the holes will enhance the child's fine motor skills.

Today we did our activity till the number 5, you can increase or decrease it based on what your child is currently learning.
